The first ever Excellence in Business awards ceremonies sponsored by the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce were held in town on January 15th. At a gala dinner, Norpak Handling were honoured to receive the Excellence in Small Business prize. The award is a specially commissioned sculpture by artist Alice Luke Chenevert. The cast aluminum piece is designed to incorporate the hills and trees of the region flowing down to Lake Ontario along the path of the Ganaraska River. It is mounted on a polished granite base.
The awards are expected to become a yearly event. The chamber wishes to promote business excellence for all its members as a means of stimulating growth throughout the area. Judging is undertaken by an independent panel. To be successful, Norpak Handling had to demonstrate Business Excellence in such areas as customer service, business philosophy, community involvement, employee training, technical innovation and safety programs. A Norpak spokesman noted awards such as these are great for customer confidence but also build employee moral and supplier enthusiasm
