Conveyor rollers are an integral part of many conveyor systems. Known to effectively handle heavy loads with ease, rollers are also easy to install and operate, making them a staple in both gravity and motorized roller conveyors. However, with constant usage, even the most robust rollers can face wear and tear, requiring replacement. But before getting a replacement, it is critical to know some do’s and don’ts for a hassle-free experience.
Do’s And Dont’s Of Replacing A Conveyor Roller
Do
Gather Information On The Make, Model And Serial Number
The best-case scenario is to have important specs about the roller in hand such as the make, model, and serial number. This holds true even for a custom roller. With the right serial number, the special parts required for the custom roller can be obtained.
Know Where The Roller Will Be Utilized
Apart from the parameters stated above, it is vital to also accurately determine where the conveyor roller will be installed. For example, snub roller is a blanket term that can vary according to where the roller is placed in the assembly. But a snub roller in the underside of the take-up assembly has a different part number than a snub roller at the end drive pulley.
Don't
Order Using Roller Diameter And Length
The diameter and length of a roller are too broad a parameter to accurately order the right replacement part. Even if the diameter of a roller is the same, small factors like bearings or thicker gauges can drastically alter the utility of a conveyor roller.
Round Your Measurements
Even the smallest of measurements must be properly documented to order the right part. For instance, a 12 gauge, 2’’ diameter roller is often mistaken for a standard, 1.9’’ diameter roller. Hence, always measure the diameter and other parameters properly using a caliper and other specialized tools.
